Health Experts Warn of Simultaneous Spread of COVID-19, Flu, and RSV During Holiday Season
As the holiday season approaches, health experts are sounding alarms about the concurrent spread of respiratory illnesses, including the JN.1 strain of coronavirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and influenza.
Amidst the circulation of these viruses and the onset of cold weather, health experts emphasize the importance of taking proactive steps to protect oneself. Additionally, the high level of air pollution is identified as another factor contributing to an increase in hospitalizations for the flu and RSV.
Dr. Akshay Budhraja, Senior Consultant in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Aakash Healthcare, highlights the impact of air pollution, stating, “With such a high level of air pollution causing respiratory problems like throat irritation, cough, sputum, breathlessness, nasal irritation, several viruses are causing respiratory infections like influenza, RSV, and Covid, which causes similar symptoms.”
To stay healthy, experts recommend adhering to Covid-appropriate behavior, with vaccination being a cornerstone of prevention. Wearing high-quality masks, such as N95s, can offer additional protection, especially for individuals at high risk of severe illness from Covid-19.
Dr. Budhraja emphasizes the use of N95 masks in crowded places, hospitals, or outdoors to protect against the harmful effects of pollution and respiratory viral infections. Additionally, practicing good hand hygiene by regularly washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
Improving airflow and ventilation in indoor spaces is also recommended to reduce the concentration of airborne viruses. This can be achieved by opening windows, using air purifiers, and turning on exhaust fans.
Dr. Budhraja provides further advice, including staying hydrated, getting adequate sleep, consuming a healthy diet, avoiding crowded places, exercising regularly, maintaining clean indoor air quality, and getting the annual flu shot and Covid-19 booster dose. He also urges individuals to stay informed with the latest guidelines and not to panic about misinformation on social media.
In case of developing symptoms of any respiratory illness, individuals are advised to stay home, get tested, and seek prompt treatment.
