Hindu Temple in California Vandalized with Anti-India Graffiti; Authorities Investigate
A Hindu temple in Newark, California, known as the Swaminarayan Mandir Vasana Sanstha, has fallen victim to vandalism, with anti-India graffiti defacing its exterior walls. The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, has sparked concerns over hate crimes and prompted an immediate response from both the temple administration and law enforcement.
The Hindu American Foundation shared images on social media, revealing slogans and hateful messages against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The graffiti was described as an attempt to traumatize temple-goers and instill a “fear of violence.”
Bhargav Raval, the spokesperson for the temple administration, explained that a devotee living near the shrine discovered the graffiti and promptly informed local authorities. A case has been filed with the Newark Police Department and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.
Newark Police Captain Jonathan Arguello addressed the incident in a press conference, describing it as a “targeted act” that would be thoroughly investigated. He expressed the community’s deep sadness over such acts and emphasized a commitment to intolerance for such behavior in Newark. Surveillance footage from neighboring residences is being examined to piece together the events leading to the defacement.
This incident follows a pattern of similar attacks on Hindu temples, not only in the United States but also in neighboring Canada. In August, a temple in Surrey, Canada, was vandalized by Khalistani supporters who put up pro-Khalistan posters on its walls and gate, calling for an investigation into India’s alleged role in the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
These incidents have raised concerns about escalating activities by Khalistan supporters, prompting increased scrutiny and clampdowns on organizations and individuals attempting to stoke separatist sentiments in various countries. The Indian government has previously expressed its apprehension about such activities and their potential impact on global harmony.
